We open an 'Incognito Mode' window and feel like we've become invisible. However, the reality is quite different: it is a local cleaning tool, not a network invisibility tool.

1. What does Incognito Mode actually do?

Its function is internal. When you close the window, it clears site history, removes cookies, and doesn't save cache info. It's for ensuring no one using your PC after you knows what you did.

2. What it does NOT hide

Your activity remains visible to:

  • Your IP address: It stays exactly the same; it is not hidden or changed.
  • Your provider (ISP): They know exactly which websites you visit.
  • The websites you visit: They register your visit and location via your public IP.

3. The myth of invisibility

If you log into Facebook or Google, those companies will know who you are. Your IP is the trail that connects your steps. For real privacy, you need to change your IP as explained in our article on how to change IP or use a secure VPN like Proton VPN or Mullvad.
